| At the start of the universe, there was only chaos. The very fabric of space-time was wrapped up and bound inexplicably to itself, before it began to settle down over time, allowing the formation of the first spirits. These were great and powerful entities, known as the Gods, and as they coalesced out of nothing, they began to know of the emptiness around themselves, a void filled with other Gods. Each and every one of them began to exert their will, pushing and pulling against those around them as they began to experiment with this universe in which they found themselves. For as the Gods formed, so did the galaxies, each filled with stars and planets, a giant playground to these childlike entities. But there was simply not enough space in the universe, and God continually interfered with God, each in the other's way until they began to realize that they could destroy each other. So the first purge began as the balance was upset. Within an instant, the number of Gods dwindled from their previously astronomical numbers, until only the strongest remained. They were the most powerful, and they sat at a stalemate, none of them able to achieve any form of victory over another. It was during this stalemate that the first beginnings of sentient life were bourn into the universe by the Gods. They were curious, and a few began to create systems of beings that could exist outside of their direct control. It was then that they learned of the spiritual energy generated by the souls given to sentient life, and a practical arms-race began, the search for superior life forms becoming the focus of each entity. Gods were attempting to find ways to generate more energy and kill off the creations of other Gods, leaving them at an incredible disadvantage. It was at this point that the Watchmaker left the astral plane, never to return. He was a God that could foresee the eventual result of this competition, and sought to protect the sentient races that were being taken advantage of, so he abandoned his ability to edit reality and descended to the mortal plane. For most Gods did not care about the condition of their creation, only that they were devoted, either out of love or fear, and that they were ready to fight to the death. Atrocities were committed, and the brutal era of racial conflict began. Gods began to die, their numbers growing yet fewer as they devised new ways to exploit life in their hunger for power. All this time, the Watchmaker worked on his creation. His goal was to create a race by mortal hands, a feat that all Gods believed impossible, yet he defied them. He crafted his race out of gears and cogs of a complexity unmatched by anything else in the universe, allowing his "Clockwork" to eventually develop souls. As the Watchmaker continued to defy the Gods, some of their number began to realize the atrocities they were committing, but one in particular became vehement about the situation. Seeking to remedy it, the god began to implement a plan in an attempt to help save the tortured souls of the mortals. It started with the Elves, which were surprisingly close to its objective. They were a humanoid race, potent in skill and patient in temperament, doing well in the initial stages with their fervent devotion, but in the end they were not fast enough to support the wishes of their God.

Old Version
- Spoiler:
At the start of everything, there was only chaos. The very fabric of existence was twisted and bound inexplicable to itself. From then on, it slowly began to separate, the souls of the divine becoming removed from the rest of the mass of matter and spiritual essence that continued to develop on its own path. These first souls came to know their own existence and the existence of the others, realizing that they loathed the presence each had, limiting each other's ability to manipulate existence. So they fought, levying incredible powers of destruction. Entire galaxies vanished in the blink of an eye, solar systems were gathered en mass and used in armies. These divine masters created hoards of lesser beings to serve them, vying for some new way to crush their fellow gods.
Damage was done and scores of these divines were extinguished in these first brutal conflicts, each of the remaining ones growing in power. One of these, a moral force for good, had an alternative plan. Its desire was to create an alternate plane, a place of paradise where deceased souls could go after death, instead of vanishing. This alternate reality would remain sealed from theirs and defy the laws governing the realm the divines existed in. But this god did not have the strength to create such a place, but it could garner such power over time. Each of the gods could amass power by creating beings that worshiped them, giving them a tribute of their own energies, solidifying the existence of divine soul. From this, the race of man was born. They were not the first, the god previously experimenting with a race that would eventually be called Elves, but they were designed to be the ultimate power source. They multiplied with a speed previously unknown, spreading among the stars far beyond their place of birth. Each on lived their lives passionately, fighting fiercely and saluting the spirit of man that had created them, providing the power necessary to create the holy place, just as the god had planned.
Others gods were suspicious, but one was vehement. This dark shadow on the universe had killed far more of the original spirits than any other and had amassed a great power. But this new plan came as a surprise to it, and the spirit of man began to challenge it for supremacy. Realizing its immanent doom, it spawned into the universe the last race to ever be created by a god. It was a being of shadow, a single unity that could split and shape into any from it desired, not unlike the gods. It absorbed the energy it needed for life from the world around it, sealing its core away in another plane, accomplishing what the spirit of man was trying to create. It began to prey on other races before beginning to attack the very gods themselves.
The spirit of man despaired, for the race of man was not ready to fight such a blight, their evolution slowed by their devotion to their creator. Already under attack, the spirit of man took part of the human race and moved to a faraway galaxy. There it took control of the holdings of a lesser god. This god was timid, and had just become strong enough to create a race to do its bidding. It had created a perfect solar system and placed its race called Dwarves on a planet that they named Mars. This planet was unusual in that the god of Mars had given it a soul, something most other divine spirits did not bother to do. The race of Dwarves had aged a few thousand years when the spirit of man took the system over and moved Mars out of its precise orbit, sentencing it to death.
In its place, the human spirit crafted a new world to be named by its inhabitants as Earth. It instilled a soul within this world, giving it powers far beyond what any god had ever given a planet, then setting the race of Elves to guard the fledgling civilization of humanity before sealing off the entire solar system with that remained of its power. The spirit of man then set itself to defend the system until humanity was ready to take its place among the stars
On the inside, the civilization of man took root and began to grow, the Elves careful guardians against the self destructive tendencies of mankind. But while man flourished, the Dwarven era was drawing to a close. In a last ditch effort to save its people, Mars reached out to Earth and asked it to take what remained of its people in as refugees. The Earth knew that the Elves would not allow this if they had knowledge of it, but decided to accept the Dwarves regardless of the Elves thoughts on the matter. It received the Dwarves from Mars and hid them deep within itself without knowledge of the Elves. Mars, no longer holding a sentient race, went into a deep hibernation while the ecosystem on its surface shriveled and died.
This entire time, the original seed of man had not disappeared as the spirit had feared it would, but had in fact managed to survive outside the system. It was shattered into many nations by Extemos attacks, but they lived on. It was in one of these nations that a young man named Vek lived. Located on a small farm on a small world in what was called The Republic, Vek grew tired of his average life, signing up for the military, knowing little of the incredible destiny he would eventually face.
His official military career was a short one. He served in a campaign against rouge cyborgs and was quickly shot down by their advanced weapons, even though city was eventually taken. Fortune smiled upon Vek as his body was whole enough and his proximity close enough for him to be part of a secret military project. When he passed out from blood loss, his body was frozen and shipped to a secret installation in orbit, then placed within one of the largest space vessels The Republic had under its command. This ship was secretly under the control of one of the council members of The Republic, who had aspirations to overthrow the council and take power for himself. Lacking the necessary manpower, he had begun looking beyond the edges of Republic space for alien technology. Since he was unable to requisition forces normally, the deceptive council member had taken to retrieving near-dead corpses from the battlefield and enhancing them with implants, allowing him to maintain a private army that only a few select individuals knew about. With it, he assaulted the ruins of ancient civilizations left over from before the Extemos threat, attempting to find a weapon that would secure his place as master of The Republic. Vek was one such corpse. He was dropped into the ruins of a planet-city left over from the golden age of a long deceased race.
Eventually, Vek lost contact with the ship in orbit, and after an encounter with the rampant AI in control of the planet, discovered the sole reason for the destruction of the entire race. Having been created by a deity obsessed with knowledge, the long dead race had developed the highest technology ever known. But that level of sophistication caused them to realize that they only held part of the puzzle. They began to use magic and develop their personal biologies until they finally arrived at the single most powerful force in the universe aside from a deity itself, Culmination. In fact, the Extemos were themselves based off of Culmination, which the dark god stole from the race long ago. After this theft, their civilization collapsed, socially unable to cope with the power of Culmination. Their weakened deity was killed by Extemos and they died out. But pieces of Culmination remained on their home world, and Vek became integrated with one through the ministrations of the crazed AI, which had access to Culmination itself. Upon this joining, Vek was reborn as Athen.
Athen was weak at first, floating in orbit around the planet, but eventually he realized full control of the Culmination that made up his essence. He was the first of his kind, a race that was Culmination, something no god could craft. With his power, Athen was able to glimpse the threat the Extemos posed to the rest of the universe and vowed to put an end to it, swearing to protect the innocent lives they preyed upon and to seek revenge upon the foolish gods that had played with the universe in such a way.
So Athen set about to defeat the Extemos, but was almost always bested in his attempts to defend the hapless worlds. The shadow could not kill him because of his Culmination, but he could not continually defend all the worlds he sought to protect. Defeat after merciless defeat plagued Athen, all the races he sought to protect falling to the Extemos. He was on the verge of dispair when The Watchmaker found him..
The Watchmaker was once a god, but grew frustrated with the conflict in the ethereal realm and so descended down to the mortal plane and took on a mortal form, encasing his spirit within a shell of flesh and blood. The whole point of his existence now was to craft a race by mortal hands, to give birth to a new nation purely on the mortal plane with devotion to no god, so that they might undo the chaos that filled the darkness between stars.
His progress was significant, but the tragedy of the Extemos struck, destroying his carefully balanced creations. He fled to another galaxy, the same one in which Earth resided. There he used the information he had gathered by his previous attempts at creation and crafted the Clockwork, a race made entire of mechanical components. They were designed to spread along the edges of the galaxy and construct waypoints for a massive shield so strong it would deny the Extemos passage and preserve the galaxy. But the Extemos were too fast and slipped in before the shield was closed, destroying it and beginning their campaign of destruction. The Watchmaker was in a state of despair when he stumbled upon Athen.
The two met on the ruins of a dying planet slowly being converted into the materials the Extemos used. After a brief confrontation, the Watchmaker learned of Athen's use of Culmination, and no longer being a true god, began to use it for himself. The two then realized what they must do together. They constructed the largest power generator ever beheld in the universe. The size of the largest of suns, it became known as The Generator, for all others were insignificant in its presence. Consisting entirely of Culmination, the awesome gyrations of this device drew power from the very fabric of the universe, a practically infinite well of power. Athen was integrally linked to this device, allowing him to draw power from it regardless of his location. The Watchmaker called all of his Clockwork to the center of the galaxy where this device floated and constructed a planet in orbit around it to house his armies and produce more mechanical soldiers.
So Athen went out into the galaxy and began to fight against the Extemos, proving successful in his conflict with darkness. But he was still unable to defend the planets he sought to protect. The Watchmaker began moving the defenseless planets through time and space and placing them in orbit around The Generator, so that his Clockwork legions could defend them from the Extemos. These planets eventually began communicating with each other and exploring the surrounding space. Under the eye of the Watchmaker they decided to band together and help Athen defend against the Extemos threat, more and more planets joining the fold. At some point they stopped being separate identities and became known as the Legion, defenders of sentience throughout the galaxy.
Thus the epic of E.P.I.C. begins.
