Sam stumbled around the conference room, dismayed at the news on TV. Could it be true? Their nations had been heading for war recently, but - surely - it can't have started here?

A look outside the window confirmed his fears. Planes swept low over the city, and bombs fell on buildings. Structures collapsed throughout the broad metropolis. Even worse, there were large robots - Canabalts, a new technology - fighting each other and wreaking havoc in the city.

The hallway was filled with debri as Sam's colleagues panicked. Even now, he could feel the building trembling. Could it, too, be close to collapse?

Sam eyed the ceiling-high window at the end of the long hallway. He unbuttoned his jacket and began to run.
